The tire pressure monitoring system, or TPMS, is designed to alert you when a tire’s pressure has become significantly low. Maintaining proper tire pressure is critical to safe driving and fuel economy. On select models, the multi-information display will indicate which tire is low, along with a check tire pressure message. On all models, a low tire pressure indicator, in the shape in the tire cross-section will light on the instrument panel. In either case, you should stop and check the tires as soon as possible and verify that they are inflated to the proper pressure. The tire information placard is on the driver’s door jam and contains the pressure specifications. Tire pressure fluctuates with the temperature, which may cause the TPMS to generate alerts unexpectedly. For instance, if the tires are checked and filled in a warm area and then driven in extremely cold weather, the tires may become under-inflated, triggering an alert. There’s also an indicator with the letters TPMS that will light if there’s a fault in the system itself. This alert means a visit to the service department is necessary. It’s important to check your tires at least once a month to maintain the optimum pressure for fuel efficiency, safety and tire life. Note that the spare tire is not monitored by the TPMS, so it will always have to be checked manually.
